The textile tradition of the people of the north eastern region of the country can be traced back to the distant Chachapoyas culture. Today they work to make their fabrics, mainly using the backstrap loom, which in this area is called “Illahua”. This traditional activity has been preserved and is practiced exclusively by women, who use it to make garments and accessories such as blankets, ponchos, vests, and saddlebags (designs taken from the iconography of the Chachapoyas).
- Visit Miguel Huaman’s workshop.
He was born in 1977 in the Pircapampa annex, Santo Tomás district, Luya province. At the age of 12 he learned, in a self-taught way, to carve wood and stone. With walnut, ishpingo, cedar and Mahogany, he carves fine, polychrome works with acrylic and natural pigments. Also, with the wood of the cupiquiero, he elaborates domestic objects. Since 2000 he has developed a production inspired by archaeological material, such as the replicas of the famous sarcophagi of Karajía. In addition, he relies on the Chachapoya culture to design totems, instruments and utilitarian objects such as lamps, vases, and others.
